Running your own small business can be quite isolating and I work on my own – it’s good to be part of something and have opportunities to join networking and training events, or use some of the online support and forums.
With over 15 years experience in business growth and development, Karen’s original field was science and laboratory research. After moving to the commercial sector in 1994 she quickly became successful in sales, marketing and product development. Combining both her scientific knowledge and business experience she was able to drive the Life Science Reagents business at Cancer Research UK to almost a fourfold increase in turnover in 3 years.
Moving into Higher Education in 2002, Karen went on to lead enterprise and commercialisation initiatives at a regional level, using her knowledge and experience of Intellectual Property, and business start-ups. She has a broad range of experience of bridging the gaps between business and education, identifying commercial opportunities, and with licensing and consultancy agreements.
Karen has been successful in securing a number of external funding applications in both the public and private sectors and has many years’ project management experience.
Karen founded DaleWood Consulting in 2010, a consultancy business providing early stage business support to young entrepreneurs and enterprise projects to primary schools. She is also a School Enterprise Champion for Sheffield City Council and a former Women's Enterprise Ambassador for the East Midlands Development Agency.
