Claire's Handmade Cakes

Claire’s Handmade Cakes was created by Claire Melvin in the autumn of 2009. She has always loved cake, but then who hasn’t, and childhood memories include initially helping to make and then taking over the weekly family Sunday cake and the annual family Christmas cake. Her interest in sugarcraft came about quite by chance – her brother and his partner started having babies and in a moment of generosity, or insanity, Claire offered to make the birthday cakes for her nephew and nieces.

This led to Claire enrolling on several sugarcraft courses, participating in a number of workshops and joining her local branch of the British Sugarcraft Guild. It was only a matter of time before Claire realised that her future lay in baking and sugarcraft. Highlights of her short career in cakes include making the wedding cake of her friends Sarah & Dave in Dublin, in September 2008; being asked to make a cake to help launch Fairtrade Fortnight in February 2009; taking part in her first sugarcraft competition in June 2009 and designing and creating the cake which launched Claire’s Handmade Cakes in October 2009.

2010 saw some exciting developments for Claire's Handmade Cakes. In May, Claire appeared as a case study in Emma Jones' book 'Working 5 To 9 - How to Start a Successful Business in your Spare Time'.

2011 saw Claire's Handmade Cakes continue to grow. In the spring, the desserts range was launched; in August, we were finalists in the 'National Cupcake Championships 2011'.

In February 2013, Claire was featured in the 'Clandestine Cake Club Cook Book' with her 'Fraisier'.

The future holds more competitions and many more cakes!
