The National Dahlia Collection Exhibit

I have had the most amazing few weeks, which started with judging at the Malvern Spring Show. I have then been helping on an exhibit at the Chelsea Flower Show for The National Dahlia Collection (based in Cornwall) and spend the Monday at Chelsea judging in the great pavilion.

Our exhibit, the forth one I have been involved in, received a gold award (the forth gold) and as you can imagine we are all over the moon.
Although our exhibit is located in the Great Pavilion and we are exhibiting a ‘floral display’ it is set out to replicate a show garden. Inspiration for this years exhibit was taken from Scottish artist Edwards James and his surreal garden located in San Luis Potosi in Mexico. The Dahlia is the official flower of Mexico this made a fantastic link.

A massive amount of work goes into planning, preparing and building any Chelsea exhibit. We are hoping with our success in recent year that in 2016, if we can obtain sponsorship, we will be designing and building a show garden. The exhibit has been a massive success and has featured on the BBC coverage of the show many times and we even had an unofficial visit from His Royal Highness Prince Harry.

I had an amazing day judging at the show on the Monday before the show opened, as I am sure you can appreciate it was a massive honour, and not one I had ever dreamt would be possible. If you’ve never been to one of the Royal Horticultural Society shows there are three more I would recommend; Hampton Court (London), Gardner’s World (Birmingham) and Tatton Park (Cheshire).
